As we know, Jack-o-lanterns are one of the most common decorations associated with Halloween. Come Halloween, most of us bust out our art skills and try to create our own pumpkin masterpiece. In fact, it isn’t easy. However, if you know the right pumpkin carving tips and tricks, you can make your carving easier and much less frustrating.
In this post, we show you 5 easy tips for carving the perfect pumpkin this Halloween.
1.Pick the right pumpkin.
First of all, to carve a perfect pumpkin, you need to choose the right pumpkin. Choose one that’s fresh, with a sturdy stem, no bruises, and a flat bottom so it won’t roll while you carve. Hardshell, no soft spot, no worms, no cuts.
When you choose your pumpkin, think about how you want to carve it. Pumpkins come in a wide range of shapes and sizes, so it is important to choose accordingly!
You should wash the outside of the pumpkin with natural soap and cool water to remove dirt, harmful bacteria.
2. Make a stencil of your design.
Before you begin to carve, using a pencil to draw your design onto the pumpkin. If you don’t like this design, you can easily erase the pencil marks and draw a new one.
Besides, it will be a lot easier to carve along a line than to just start carving on a whim, regardless of your pumpkin carving technique.
3. Cut from the bottom, not the top.
You should cut your “lid” from the bottom of the pumpkin to help prevent the sides from caving in later.
If you do carve from the top, cut out the lid on an angle. This way it won’t drop inside the pumpkin when you replace it like it would with a straight up-and-down cut.
4. Scoop out all the pulp.
To keep your small children involved in the pumpkin carving process, you can have them help with scooping out the seeds.
You can buy a special “claw” for pumpkin gutting, but an ice cream scoop will do just fine. Get as much pulp out as you can so the pumpkin will be easy & clean to carve.
When you thin the inner wall of the pumpkin, it will be easier to pierce the shell.
5. Use flashlights, not candles.
When you are done the carving, it’s time to put your jack-o-lantern on display. You’d better place glow sticks or small flashlight inside of it instead of candles to avoid fire hazards. Besides, your pumpkin can shine safely all night.
